Before adopting or buying a puppy, you should think about what it really means. A dog it’s not just a toy that walks around the house. A dog needs attention, dedication, time, effort, and medical care when necessary. It’s a lot more than people usually think. You will have to tend to its every need.

One of the most common concerns when it comes to furry pets, in general, is a flea infestation. Fleas are small parasites that cause itching, rashes, and even allergic reactions in some dogs. However, there are several methods to either kill or prevent fleas. Some people choose to purchase spot-on drops, some use powder, but some of theownersprefer flea collars.

How do flea collars work?

The principle is quite simple. Once you tie the collar around your dog’s neck, two things will happen. The first is that it will repel fleas because the collar emits a gas that is toxic to these parasites. The dog will not feel a thing (most of the times), and if you choose an odorlesscollar, you will not feel anything either. However, fleas will come nowhere near your furry friend. The second function of a flea collar for dogs is that it treats any infestation your pet may have. If your dog is fighting a flea infestation, the active ingredients in the collar will kill fleas and ticks on contact. Unlike other types of flea medication, with a collar, the insect doesn’t have to bite in order to die.

Keep in mind that not all collars serve both functions. Some may treat an infestation, while others are just for prevention. My recommendation is to read the specifications on the box to see exactly what you are buying. The best thing you could do is purchase a collar that serves both purposes.

The advantages and disadvantages of using flea collars

While there are several methods of getting rid of fleas or keep them away, a flea collar has its pros and cons, just like any other type of medication.

As for the benefits:

  • It’s very effective – the collar will be around the dog’s neck at all times. Usually, a flea collar will fight against ticks too. I don’t know if you know this, but ticks usually bite in the head and neck area, which a collar will not allow.
  • A collar will last longer than any other solution – some collars keep their effectiveness up to 8 months. Spot-on drops are usually active for 30 days. The difference is huge.
  • It’s cost effective – you may think the flea collars are more expensive than spot-on drops, but in the long run, you save a lot of money. You only have to buy the collar once every 6-8 months.
  • It’s hygienic – I assume you used drops at least once in your dog’s life. While the medication enters the skin and the hair dries, your dog is not allowed on the furniture, you cannot pet it on the back, and you need to keep the dog away from children. A collar will not require such things. You just put it on, and that is it.
  • It’s water resistant – the truth is that most flea treatments are water resistant, but not at all times. For example, your dog is not allowed to make contact with water 48 hours before and after using spot-on drops.

The drawbacks:

  • It works mostly in the head and face area – while it is a great solution when you fear ticks, fleas tend to ‘live’ anywhere on the dog’s body. That is why it is recommended that you use the collar together with other flea medications.
  • Not all dogs can stand it – some puppies are allergic to the ingredients in the collar. The percentage is very small, but it’s there. For example, I used a collar on my 8-week old female boxer, and she became lethargic, she didn’t eat anymore. Once I removed the collar, it took just a couple of hours to come back to her

What to consider when buying a flea collar for dogs

Before anything else, the best thing you can do is ask your dog’s veterinarian. He or she will be able to tell you what the best solution for your puppy is. If the vet recommends a particular kind of flea treatment, you can go on and search for that specific type. If you have doubts concerning flea collars, here is what you should look for.

  • Efficiency – a high-quality flea collar for dogs will last up to 8 months. That is a lot comparing to other flea treatments. Other than the collar, only the pill can have a relatively prolonged effect, but that is only 3 months. Going for long-term flea treatments will mean less concern for you. You won’t have to check monthly when the last time your dog was treated for fleas was. Eight months is a long time to go without worries.
  • Odorless – it’s true that some insecticides have a particular smell, but search for a flea collar that has no odor. It’s best for you and your family, and for the dog as well. Some collars have a strong smell of eucalyptus, which can be very disturbing in enclosed spaces.
  • How early you can use it – most flea treatments are recommended for puppies who are at least three months old. But flea collars can be usedas soon as 7 When your puppy is that small, and there is a flea problem, you can’t really do much unless you buy a collar. Otherwise, your dog can get rashes or allergies. Even you can get bit by fleas. But 7 weeks sounds great. Anyway, chances are you are not going to adopt or purchase a puppy younger than that.
  • Water resistant – dogs love water, some more than others. That is why you need your dog protected even if it goes for a swim or likes to run while it’s raining. With that in mind, look for a collar that is water resistant. Most of them are, but I just wanted to make sure that you remember that aspect.

Quick tip: a lot of people buy flea treatments from the grocery store. I advise against it. They will not keep their effectiveness for too long, and truth be told, they are not very efficient to begin with. It’s better if you go to pet shops, or better yet, you can buy anything online.

What are the best flea collars for dogs?

No answer will be correct for all dogs. Some react better to a particular brand, while others prefer other active ingredients. Flea collars don’t work the same for all dogs. What you can do is do a little research. See what brand is best in general, or which one is the best for the breed your dog is. If you are still doubtful, here are my suggestions.

Bayer Seresto Flea and Tick Collar for Dogs

I decided to start with this one because it seems to be the most popular flea collar for dogs. Thousands of dog owners bought this collar and are very satisfied with the results. That is why Seresto is one of the top-rated flea collars for dogs. Thanks to its sustained release technology, Seresto provides protection for 8 months. It will act against both fleas and ticks.

If you ask three veterinarians which flea collar they recommend, chances are that they will all say the same thing. Serestois what you need to keep fleas and ticks away from your dog. It provides a non-greasy, odorless insecticide that will kill existent fleas and will prevent new ones from getting in your dog’s hair.

Seresto is very easy to use. It is entirely adjustable, and it only takes a couple of minutes to put it around your dog’s neck. Getting it off is just as simple. The collar has a two-way release system. No matter what breed of dog you have, Bayer manufactures Seresto flea collars for every size. From Chihuahuas to Saint Bernards, all dogs are protected against fleas and ticks.

Bayer Seresto is safe to use on puppies who are at least 7 weeks old. It will not affect them in any way. You will be safe too. Just because your dog has a flea collar on, that doesn’t mean you can no longer sleep with your pooch. Click here to read more reviews and buy on Amazon.

Scalibor Flea and Tick Dog Collar

Scalibor is another product I would recommend. It protects against fleas and ticks, but also against biting flies. Short-haired breeds always suffer from mosquito bites, but with this collar, your pup will have an itchless summer.

Unlike the previous product, Scalibor protects your dog against parasites only for 5 or 6 months. I still think it’s amazing how a simple collar can be effective for that long. The active ingredient is deltamethrin, which is very efficient against insects. The deltamethrin is released by the friction between the collar and the dog’s neck. Most collars release their active ingredients through evaporation, but not this one.

The Scalibor collar comes in two sizes. One is 65 cm long and contains 1g of deltamethrin, and the other one is 48 cm long and contains only 0.76g of deltamethrin. It can be used on pregnant females and on puppies 7 weeks old or older.  Water will not affect the collar’s efficiency. You don’t have to remove it after your dog goes for a swim.

Scalibor has no smell. Your dog will not be bothered by the collar, and neither will you. The manufacturer recommends that you put on the collar a week before exposing your dog to a risk of infestation. That is because the active ingredient will exert its full effect after one week. Hartz UltraGuard Flea and Tick Collar for Dogs

Hartz may not be top of the line, but from what I’ve seen online, people seem very satisfied with the results. UltraGuard is a high-quality flea and tick collar that will protect your dog against those parasites for approximately 7 months. However, some people say that it becomes rather inefficient after 5 months. Still, for the price it has, I believe it is worth it.

The Hartz Collar will fit any dog with a maximum of 26 inches around their neck. It is water resistant, so the efficiency will not be affected by a day at the beach or rain. The color is white. This collar has a smell, but it’s a clean, fresh scent. Nothing about it will bother you or your dog.

The UltraGuard Collar is easy to put on and take off. You shouldn’t have trouble doing it in less than a minute. Just put it around your dog’s neck, adjust it so you can insert 2 fingers between the collar and the dog’s neck, and cut the extra length if necessary. Just make sure that you are outside the first time you put on the collar. The fleas will jump right off the dog, and you don’t want them all over your house. My recommendation

Although I believe all collars will work splendidly in some cases and barely in others, I cannot get over the fact that Seresto gathered so many fans over the years. People say that it is the best flea collar for dogs, and they will keep buying it. With that in mind, I strongly recommend this product for your pet. I honestly believe it’s one of the best flea collars for dogs on the market.

Conclusion

I believe that flea prevention and treatment is the number one concern for all dog owners. Not only it can be uncomfortable, but it can lead to dermatitis, allergies, and ticks can be lethal. That is why it’s important to purchase a flea and tick collar for your dog. The three products I described above are excellent suggestions, and I truly believe that they will protect your beloved furry friend. Click here to buy on Amazon
